Edmonton Big Bin

The City of Edmonton will be holding 5 separate Big Bin Events this year. This is a great opportunity for residents to recycle or dispose of household items too large for regular collection for free.

The nearest Big Bin Event to Queen Mary Park will take place:
 August 22nd/23rd at Commonwealth Stadium
(West parking lot, enter off 112 Ave and 89 St)
from 9:00am – 5:00pm

Please note, all residents must:

  • unload their own vehicles
  • maintain physical distancing
  • wear a mask

Accepted materials include:

  • couches, chairs, mattresses, and other household furniture items too large for curbside pickup
  • fridges, freezers, washers, dryers, and other large household appliances
  • computers, televisions, and other household electronics
  • grass clippings and yard waste including branches no longer than 4 ft and 2.5 ft in diameter
  • tires and scrap metal

Household hazardous waste including paint, used oil, household cleaners, and batteries will not be accepted at Big Bin Events. These items must be taken to an Eco Station.

Walk The Block

Recently Edmonton Neighbourhood Watch (ENW) reached out to the Queen Mary Park Community League with some helpful suggestions for keeping our neighbourhood safe.

According to ENW, “Research has shown that crime is significantly reduced where residents are visibly present and are activity involved in their streets and neighbourhoods. Individuals out randomly walking are more effective than scheduled citizen patrols.” That’s where the Walk the Block program comes in.

With many people working from home we encourage our neighbours to find a walking buddy (following COVID prevention guidelines of course) and take some time to walk around QMP.

While you walk:

  • take the time to meet and greet your neighbours
  • Report any suspicious activities to the police at 780.423.4567 or using the EPS Mobile App
  • Become familiar with the homes and vehicles that belong in your area
  • If you see a crime in progress, call 911 and do not engage.

Let’s work together to keep Queen Mary Park the beautiful and safe community we love!

More information regarding the formal Walk the Block program can be found here: https://enwatch.ca/walk-your-block/

Valley Line West LRT Utility Relocations

EPCOR is responsible for relocating all the power, water and drainage utilities to avoid potential conflicts with the Valley Line West LRT infrastructure. This is the second stage of the Valley Line, an urban-style 27 km line that will operate between Mill Woods in southeast Edmonton and Lewis Farms in west Edmonton.

The work includes the construction of a new drainage tunnel, replacing the existing infrastructure which was constructed in the 1930s and improving reliability. Power infrastructure will also undergo upgrades to maintain reliability and see some infrastructure converted from aerial to underground in some locations. Water mains will be replaced, improving the standard and reducing the risk of main breaks.

Some of this work may have an effect on Queen Mary Park residents, including temporary water or power outages, traffic interruptions, and noise.

Please take some time to read more information on the project and timelines here.

More information about the project can be found here.
